…Then, the Greeks lived in City – States called “Polis” which, by the way, is where the word Metropolis comes from – Meter (Mother) & Polis (City) meaning “Mother City” or main city. Each Plis was a sovereign political unit and each had a fortified centre where residents took refuge from attack from neighbouring cities.
No longer subject to attack from rival cities, the White Tower now houses a famous Greek museum.
